Eurydice // Isabel Erdos

flair
Eurydice/Isabel feels a great affinity with the forest, and especially wood. She is an expert woodworker, able to manipulate every type of wood to create impossibly magnificent works, or whatever she wants to make. They range from small, elegant pieces (jewelry, frames, lamps), to more practical, though still elegant, works (doors, lamps, furniture).

personality
Prior to her death, Eurydice was playful and innocent, as most other nymphs are; she floated through life seemingly unconsciously, following the course laid out for many of her fellow maiden nymphs without a second thought.

As such, it was not that she was deeply in love with Orpheus, who was a masterful and seductive musician (and who was probably indeed in love with her). Rather, Eurydice was merely following the well-trodden tradition of marriage to an exceptional suitor.

Fleeing from rape and dying instead, as well as Orpheus’ failed attempt at resurrecting her, definitely changed this carefree attitude of hers. In short, she hardened resolutely: at her release from the depths of Hades by Cronus, and her newfound consciousness, she made an important vow: to forever remain independent. She is immediately suspicious of men who seem interested in her, and rarely produces long lasting friendships with them unless she is certain their interest is entirely platonic. No longer will she idle her time away--especially now that she is mortal. However, her playful nature seems to have been preserved even through it all: she now takes time to appreciate her thoughts and her environment on an intellectual level, but she also seems to derive a childlike pleasure from it, as if gazing upon life’s small wonders for the first time.

Because of her experiences, she is somewhat of a recluse at times. Her nature is to be outgoing and overly friendly, but at times she can be withdrawn and sullen. In fact, she is almost ashamed of her previous weaknesses and seems to be on a self-driven journey to remedy them, and to eventually become the strong woman she is meant to be.

Eurydice does harbor lingering bitterness about her previous life. She is, as H.D.’s poem expresses, frustrated at being thrown around and manipulated as some minor device in someone else’s plot. While secretly grateful for her release from Hades and for a second chance at life, she is now more determined than ever to carve a larger piece of the world for herself. With her newfound ambition, her woodcarving is a great outlet for her overflowing creativity. She prides herself on her works being displayed in the homes of many anonymous mortals, and she accepts compliments with grace and genuine appreciation. In fact, her childlike vigor lingers in this respect as well: she is easily amused and flattered, and struggles at times to remain professional and neutral when being complimented. However, as soon as she perceives flirtation, she immediately withdraws with a polite smile and a friendly parting.

In short, Eurydice seems to be struggling between her previous life as a careless nymph and her present life as a mortal bent on self-fulfillment. This internal struggle manifests itself in her woodcarvings and furnishings, on which she spends most of her time attentively creating. It is also apparent in her interactions with other people, because she consciously attempts to exude the confidence of a strong, reclusive woman even while she longs for innocence and play. She does seem to have occasional outbursts of unhindered, childlike joy, but prefers her thoughts and feelings to remain internal until she is ready to express them with her idea of sophistication.
